1936 Oahu Custom Shop Lap Steel Guitar Made for Howard Lucraft One off design with 23” scale This guitar has a very interesting provenance. We haven’t come across other one off designs from this era of Oahu’s production. I suspect Howard Lucraft had a high measure of respect with Oahu’s higher ups. Howard Lucraft (1916-2011) was a reknowned musician who is credited with many accomplishments over his long career. He composed & played with more accomplished musicians than there is space to name. He had one of the first jazz TV shows anywhere. In a ‘Jazz City’ club setting performers included Billie Holiday, Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel and Shelly Manne. Lucraft interviewed famous guests at the TV club tables, the first being Quincy Jones. As an example of Howard’s popularity; after the War, when the BBC opened its first television station; purportedly, Howard’s was the first program on the station featuring a live musical ensemble. His life was devoted to music. He had this lap steel made to his request utilizing then state of the art design. It’s a unique museum quality instrument in great condition. I played it to check out the sound & it can soar or be clean. It can have excellent sustain. I overdrove it & got controlled feedback which I could play over the top of. This guitar stacks up well. In sound production, it was ahead of it’s time. The tuners are the same as used on Oahu’s double-neck Iolana. We date this guitar circa 1936. It has Centralab potentiometers with patent numbers issued in 1936. And the other components also fit this era. This is a playable collector’s instrument. The case has stickers from Cunard-White Star & the Queen Mary. This guitar was apparently played by Howard Lucraft on an Atlantic crossing.
