Description

Melobar – Rosac era Slide Guitar This very cool rare "Rosac" Melobar lets you play lap steel standing up. This bridge has multiple notches with different spacing for different setups. It can be set up for from 6 to 10 strings.  A very functional piece of slide history. Professionals such as Rusty Young with Poco, David Lindley, Jorma Kaukonen, Cindy Cashdollar, Jeff Healy, Arlen Roth, Steve Fishel, Roy Clark, Troy Klontz with Brooks and Dunn, Jeff Peterson with Clint Black, Howard Leesea of Heart, Brian Jones with the early Rolling Stones (later with Rolling Stones Ron Wood as well), Patrick Arbuthnot of British country rockers The Rockingbirds, Jimmy Page and many others used the Melobar as an open tuned lead instrument . According to Melobar guru Ted Smith, (son of the developer), the very first Melobars were standard guitars with the 45 degree neck glued on top. The original patent for the 45 degree neck was filed in 1967 by Walt Smith . The first production Melobars were manufactured for Walt Smith at the Mosrite factory in Bakersfield California in 1967. The Rolling Stones Brian Jones had one and loaned it to Jimmy Page just before he died. This was also the guitar model Jorma Kaukonen used on the Jefferson Airplane Crown of Creation Album. After Walt Smith's death in 1991 his son Ted dug into a dusty old pile of blanks & parts that hadn’t seen the light of day for decades. An article in Guitar Player magazine called Melobars development “Basement Genius” and highlighted these guitars. After the Mosrite factory closed, some former Mosrite employees started what was called the Rosac factory and built around 300 Melobars for Walt Smith in the early 70's. For comparison, the Guitar Bar has one for $1600.00 & Reverb has a couple for $1825.00 & $2000.00 Unique lap steel guitar designed to be worn like a regular guitar and played like a lap steel, sunburst finish, 10 strings or whatever lesser combo you prefer, rarely seen wooden fretboard, 21 frets, 2 single coil pickups specially designed for this string width, 22 1/4" scale, Gig bag, VG condition *Please see our other listings and store for many other Vintage (Lap Steel) Guitars and Amplifiers.
